Summary
Abstract
This article explores saxophone quartet performance and rehearsal strategies from the perspective of four prominent university saxophone professors who play in internationally recognized saxophone quartets. Data was collected through one-on-one interviews between the author and Professor Steven Banks, Dr. Geoffrey Deibel, Dr. Joe Girard, and Dr. Nicki Roman. Each of these unique artists’ quartets serves as an aspirational chamber ensemble for high school, undergraduate, and graduate saxophone quartets. Topics discussed included rehearsal techniques such as balance, intonation, blend, and goal setting in addition to interpersonal skills such as team building, communicating productive feedback, and managing conflict. Practical recommendations are made by the author for quartet rehearsals and performances from the data collected.

Introduction
Saxophone quartets have established themselves in the chamber music genre as exciting and dynamic ensembles through consistent displays of excellence in concert performances and chamber music competitions. In the highly regarded Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, saxophone quartets have received 47 out the 102 gold, silver, or bronze medals awarded in the Senior Wind Division since 1982. In addition, 3 of the ensembles that won gold medals went on to claim the Senior Division Grand Prize. This rise in prominence was possible thanks to the dedication and work of numerous influential performers and teachers from around the globe. Four of these modern-day musicians include Professor Steven Banks of Kenari Quartet, Dr. Geoffrey Deibel of h2 Quartet, Dr. Joe Girard of Sinta Quartet, and Dr. Nicki Roman of Fuego Quartet. Each has spent countless hours refining the art of chamber music alongside their colleagues. All four quartets have won international chamber music competitions, recorded professionally, and premiered new works by some of the most well-known modern composers. The techniques they have gathered from playing in professional saxophone quartets and from teaching chamber ensembles are invaluable for all saxophonists. This article serves as a resource for saxophone quartets of all levels by providing insights from members of the most outstanding current saxophone quartets on the skills necessary to enhance chamber music rehearsals and performances.
Methodology
In order to compile research-based suggestions that would be useful for saxophone quartets at varying stages of development, it was deemed necessary to gather qualitative data.

Perspectives on past climate using lake sediments are critical for assessing modern and future climate change. These perspectives are especially important for water-stressed regions such as the western United States. One such region is northwestern California (CA), where Holocene-length hydroclimatic records are scarce. Here, we present a 9000-year, relative lake level record from Maddox Lake (CA) using a multi-indicator approach. The Early Holocene is characterized by variably low lake levels with a brief excursion to wetter climates/relative highstand ca. 8.4–8.06 cal ka BP, possibly related to the 8.2 ka cold event and changing Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). From 5.2–0.55 cal ka BP, Maddox Lake experienced a long-term regression, tracking changes in summer-winter insolation, tropical and northeast Pacific SSTs, and the southward migration of the ITCZ. This gradual regression culminated in a pronounced relative lowstand during the Medieval Climatic Anomaly (MCA). A marked relative highstand followed the MCA, correlative to the Little Ice Age. The latter reflects a far-field response to North Atlantic volcanism, solar variability, and possibly changes in AMOC and Arctic sea ice extent. Our results further confirm the hydroclimatic sensitivity of northwest California to various forcings including those emanating from the North Atlantic.

Paleoperspectives of climate provide important information for understanding future climate, particularly in arid regions such as California, where water availability is uncertain from year to year. Here, we present a record from Barley Lake, California, focusing on the interval spanning the Younger Dryas (YD) to the early Holocene (EH), a period of acute and rapid global climate change. Twelve radiocarbon dates constrain the timing between 12.9 and 8.1 ka. We combine a variety of sediment analyses to infer changes in lake productivity, relative lake level, and runoff dynamics. In general, the lake is characterized by two states separated by a <200-year transition: (1) a variably deep, lower-productivity YD lake; and (2) a two-part variably shallow, higher-productivity EH lake. Inferred EH winter-precipitation runoff reveals dynamic multidecadal-to-centennial-scale variability, in agreement with the EH lake-level data. The Barley Lake archive captures both hemispheric and regional signals of climate change across the transition, suggesting a role for both ocean-atmosphere and insolation forcing. Our paleoperspective emphasizes California's sensitivity to climate change and how that change can generate abrupt shifts in limnological regimes.

The influence of heat treatment (homogenization) on the microstructure, mechanical behavior, and soft magnetic properties of a face-centered cubic (fcc)-based high-entropy alloy (HEA), Fe29Co28Ni29Cu7Ti7, fabricated by casting, was investigated in detail. The as-cast Fe29Co28Ni29Cu7Ti7 HEA was composed of a primary fcc phase containing coherent dispersed L12 nanoprecipitates and trace amounts of a needle-like phase. The tensile yield strength (σ0.2), ultimate strength, and total elongation of the as-cast alloy are 917 MPa, 1060 MPa, and 1.8%, respectively. Following homogenization, the alloy having a single fcc phase shows a decrease of ∼ 55% in yield strength and a decrease of ∼ 36% in ultimate strength; however, the total elongation is increased from 1.8 to 52%. Saturation magnetization (Msat) is decreased from 111.54 to 110.34 Am2/kg, by contrast, coercivity (Hc) is increased from 266.65 to 966.89 A/m. The dissolution of precipitates and grain growth are mainly responsible for the changes in magnetic properties and mechanical behavior.

In the early 1970s the first large cohorts of Chicano PhD scholars entered academia, often hired into faculty positions at newly created Chicano departments or centers. These Chicano scholars came after earlier pioneer Mexican-American historians such as Carlos Castañeda and George I. Sanchez at the University of Texas, Austin; Julian Samora of the University of Notre Dame; and Carlos Cortes of the University of California, Riverside. Instead, they came of age during the fluorescence of the Chicano movimiento of the 1960s and 1970s. The academic identities of the first Chicano PhD scholars were firmly grounded in Chicanismo, a term which emphasizes ethnic nationalism, political and economic equity, and cultural and community pride.
